National Genotype Programme (NGP) (Voluntary Scheme)

NGP assists flock owners in selecting breeding sheep that are less susceptible to Scrapie.

The commercial laboratories approved by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) to provide a blood testing service to determine the genotype of the sheep are listed below. The applicant may choose either laboratory, but if they wish to use a laboratory other than those on DAFM’s list for this service, the laboratory must be approved by the Department prior to the application. The cost of the service and the projected turnaround times for samples are to be agreed between the applicant and the laboratory of their choosing.

Participation in the NGP involves a flock owner applying to the Department to have National Sheep Identification System (NSIS) identified sheep genotyped. The applicant designates a Private Veterinary Practitioner to take blood samples. A form containing details relating to the flock owner, the designated PVP and the tag numbers of the sheep to be tested will be generated and issued to the designated PVP by the Department.

The transfer of blood samples to the laboratory is a matter between the flock owner, the PVP and the laboratory.

The laboratory transmits electronically to the Department the result of each individual test and the Department then issues the flock owner with an NGP Certificate that states the genotype of each of the sheep tested.

Please note that only blood samples are eligible for the Voluntary National Genotype Programme. Tissues samples are not eligible.

DAFM will issue NGP certificates to the applicant following genotyping by the laboratory. Any results issued by the laboratory to the PVP or applicant should not be considered as NGP certificates.
